Question Rusty-Brown and Purple algae on new setup?

I set up my first SW 90 G tank about three weeks ago with 100 LBS LR. Everything is going great! My LR is getting covered in a rusty brown color algae, and a purple-ish color algae. I am just looking for an update on whether or not this is a normal occurence. Is this what they call a diatom(sp.?) bloom?

yes your are right it is a diatom bloom. the purple-ish color algae, if its stringy it is a cynobacteria.

after a couple of weeks both if these should start to clear up when the tank matures.

Most new tanks undergo a few typs of algea blooms. First come the diatoms, usually brown and stringy. Next comes the cyanobacteria, more reddish, thick, kind of like slime. Last is the dreaded hair algea, green and fuzzy just like a tennis ball. If you have good circulation, good skimming and some patience, these will all pass. Sometimes you skip one or the other ( I never had a cyano bloom in my 29g, but I certainly went through diatoms and hair), but not going through one bloom doesn't mean things are off course, it just means you were lucky and had the right combination of filtration and circulation to avoid it.

Have patience, this will pass soon.........
