DT Chicago with kids?

I know there is a ton of stuff out there to do in Chicago but I am looking for some insight from the locals. Whats fun, relatively cheap (after paying for a hotel, it has to be really cheap...) and "kid friendly". Our daughter is 13 months so we need to find something that will keep her interested and entertained. We are going to spend a couple days down there in two weeks.

Shedd is probably out, we have been at least 5X in the past few years. How is the Field? Does it have any kid stuff or is it like AMNH?

Good ones Skunk. I would also add the museum of science and industry.

I think for younger kids, Museum of Science & Industry is the best. Lots of interactive stuff there.

I would second MSI and would say Field is great if they are into Dinosaurs and/or bugs

Navy Pier is cool for kids even if you don't pay for anything major just wandering around is fun.

Just noticed you said 13 months old. I would reccommend the children's museum in Navy Pier or the field for the stuffed animals. A 13 month old will like seeing all the animals and won't be bothered one way or the other that they are 'stuffed' and not moving

I knew I could count on the CMAS folks to come up with some good ideas! One last thing, any suggestions on kid friendly restaurants that are not chains?

Thanks again for your suggestions!

Hmm I have high standards for Indian food.....Jackson Diner in Queens set the bar pretty high a few years back.

We finally have a decent place in Madison. I laughed the first time I had Indian here. Then I cried a little because we are probably staying for a while.

My wife doesnt like spice all that much in hers though so either way, we might give it a shot.
