What type of wood to skin a stand with??

I am getting ready to skin my stand and am curious as to what you guys would recommend in terms of wood type to skin the stand in. The stand is going to only have one large front door. I am looking at using 1/2" wood for the skin, and plan on staining it a dark cherry color. The skin isn't going to be structural to the frame. ( I used 2x4's to frame it, Dimensions are 28" W x 28" D x 40" H) Thanks Jon

It depends on the look of the finished product that you want. a nice Sanded Oak veneer stained with cherry stain would look nice. its about 90 bucks for a 4x8 foot sheet though....

Agree with GACDIVER it all depends on the look you want. I went with oak and first tanks stand and canopy was little pricey. HD was clearing out some wood when I did the 90g one and I got the 3/4" Oak veneer plywood in 4x8 sheets for the cost of the 1/2". I bought the 4 sheets they had left for the stand and future projects.

Look at the other furniture the stand will be by and try and get the grain as close as possible for the best match.

They have a few styles of wood in 1/2" you can look at at cheap to expensive prices.

my first stand was oak ply (1/4" over 2x4 for a 20 gal) cherry stain, btw. the solid oak trim cost 4x what the ply did.

my current tank(58 gallon) is 1/2" maple ply with solid walnut edging.
The bench beside it is my 29gallon top off. it's 1x2 frame with 1/4" ply. the walnut is 1/16" cutoff from when I made my tank. I used contact cement...
