Adding a fuge on the side
Don't know if this belongs here or in DIY, so move as necessary.
The setup is a 30g bowfront with a stand that looks nice, but isn't functional. Here's a closeup of the poorly chosen stand with minimal space underneath: Here's where I want the new refugium to go: Now, I want to get rid of the HOB fuge that's currently in there and I want to run a full-on refugium but it has to be plumbed out to the side where it will sit on a stand. I have most of the materials to do this (overflow box, spare aquarium, pump) but I have no idea how to do this effectively and what problems I could run into. Has anyone run a fuge on the side instead of underneath, and if so, how? |

Wow.
I don't expect mine to look anything nearly as good as that, but I'm still unsure as to how to plumb the feed and return lines. By the way, did I mention I suck at this kind of thing? For me, this is ambitious but I know it'll pay off if I can pull it off. |

I think the proper way would have the tank/fuge use a common sump.

Common sump? I could guess what you mean, and probably be close, but could you explain?

Well, here is my thread on the same thing, in case there is anything there to help you:
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...readid=1271949 I'm still not sure what I am going to do. |

I have a corner tank also and was able to put a sump/fuge under the stand. I have more room than you though. What if you built shelves to the sides in those useless areas of the stand for your additives and such... and put a tall tank underneath. Go to a plastics shop and have a 16 inch tall tank built with a 12 x 12 footprint or 11 x 11. what ever would fit. 3 chambers... 1 for the filter sock, 1 for the fuge and 1 for the return chamber. Just don't make the mistak that I did... I made the return chamber too small. Constantly needs to be topped off.
