There really isn't a useful test for iron but it's a very large range of safe levels. Here is an article on it:

I add it only to boost the growth of my cheato to help with my overfeeding and big fish.

I dose iron periodically. My iron "test" is the color of my chaetomorpha. I have had issues with it not growing and turning yellow. Adding iron fixed both problems. If I notice it turning yellow again, I add a small amount of iron supplement. If it's green, I don't.

I've dosed iron once or twice, trying to get a yellow-green coral to be more yellow and less green (iron supposedly can do that).

I stopped dosing iron though because I'm having nuisance algae issues and iron can make that situation worse.

Personally, I think you missed the two main groups you'll find:

e) Why would I add Iron?
f) I don't test and/or don't need to.

I do add it but on rare ocassions, only when everything is getting a washed out look. little goes a long way.

When I add I just give a quick "glug" of it. That's on about 350 gallons of water though. I'm no where near even the bottles regular dosing level and I probably only use 1 big bottle per year. If you go on a strict dosing schedule, test it though.

My cheato grows great but I have a 400 watt Iwasaki 6500 bulb hanging over a stock tank full.

I keep a fair amount of flow in there too. My main return pump is pulling about 1500 gallons/hour and I have a mjmod at the return area that blows at the intake for the return pump to help keep cheato from going in it. So that's about 3500 gph in a 110 gallon stock tank so ~34X turnover.

I pull and shake it around 2-3 times per week.
