How about something simple as the "Gastropod Network"? You don't see any nerite breeding action at all? I am constantly finding mine having "meetings" and my tank is filled with their egg masses. They are all over the glass, rock, and even other snails. Many of my ceriths and turbos have nerite eggs on them.

Jonathan,

It needs to be more than the gastropod network, because I have more than gastropods breeding. I think Invertebrate or Cleanup Crew or something similar needs to be in the name.

I only have 4 nerites and I'm not sure I have a male and female. All my other snails continue to reproduce, but these guys aren't laying eggs (at least that I can see).

I also just found the PERFECT containers to ship the snails inside the thermos instead of plastic baggies. Taco Cabanna (local mexican restaurant) condiment cups. 4 of them stack up inside the thermos perfectly. I can't wait to try them for my next shipment.

Maybe I should send you a few nerites? They have the coolest shells I think.

What about:

-- Poo Eaters Network
-- Detritus Busters
-- Tank (or Reef) Detailers R Us
-- Scum Suckers Network
-- Doody Lovers Community (DLC)

Jonathan,

Thanks for the suggestions, I personally like the Scum Suckers Network. hehe.

Marc, good suggestion, but if I go with SBC then people will constantly complain about my poor customer service and how slow the DSL connection is

For once a short non-reef related post

I recently celebrated my birthday and I received a late b-day present from my wife: An Ipod nano

I can now listen to the calming melody of Marc and Quicksilver's reefcasts while attempting to pump iron, or at least pretending to workout.

Then you should be able to do so yet again in less than 24 hours. Episode 7 is about to go online

Happy belated!

Hey all,

How is everyone? I've been away for a while, busy with school. Everything is good with the tank and I just received a cool shipment from Melev

Mini-brittlestars are one of my favorite animals and Marc sent me some of his brittles packed 3 different ways to see why the last shipment failed:

Method1: Wet paper towel, no extra water
0/6 survived

Method2: Water only
6/6 survived

Method3: Water + Cheato
6/6 survived although one is barely moving.

I had been told by some relatively trustyworthy sources that shipping with a wet paper towel might be the best way for mini-brittles. Looks like that might not be true.

Here are a couple of pictures, some of the stars lost some leg tips but are moving around fine:

A gorgeous black one:

The rest were all a pretty shade of red and green:

Hi Brian,

Hopefully the ones you got will do well for you and breed over time. Some didn't want to come out of the rockwork nor the temporary holding tank they were placed in for the shipment later that day.

So 12 of 21 lived? Can you tell what the water temperature was? Did the recording device work and how do you extract the data?

Marc,

Yep, I hope they breed too! It looks like 15 of the 21 lived, the only ones that didn't make it were the wet paper towel ones. 2 of the remaining 15 look a little iffy, but so far 5 hours later are still moving around the QT. I'm going to leave them in the QT for a couple of weeks to monitor them and test what foods they will eat.

The water temperature for the ones in the thermos was 27 C, loose inside the styrofoam was almost 30C. So the thermos definitely helped. Did you put the freeze pack directly in the box from the freezer or the refrigerator?

It looks like the recorder is recording and I'm going to let it run the full 5 days and then try to get the graph out.

Thanks for taking the time to package like I asked, you really gave me a lot of data!

Brian

The frozen pack was out of the freezer, wrapped in newspaper and taped to the lid. I just doubt it stayed on the lid and probably dropped down into the contents of the box. 30 C sounds hot. (Googling now...

30 x 9 / 5 + 32 = 86 F .... Hmm, is Houston in Europe? )

The thermos was better at 80.6 F, roughly what my tank water is on a typical day.

I've always wanted to learn how to do the Celsius/Farenhiet conversion in my head I leave my digital pH/Temp meter in C so I have to figure out the F myself

Hey all,

It has been a long time since I updated this thread because I have been very busy with other things. I will no longer be trying to maintain a thread on multiple reef forums. If you want to follow the progress of my tank, please bookmark this thread:

Sorry, we do not allow cross linking to other forums.

It should be a pretty active thread soon as I'm redesigning my reef system to focus on attempting to breed corals and invertebrates.

Opps, I forgot about the not cross linking to other forum thing. If anyone wants to follow the progress of my current tank, you can click on my little red www house.

Cheers,
