Asterina stars

I know everyone has them in their tnaks and lots of people want to get rid of them and my harlequin would love them, so if anyone wants to send me theirs I will pay for shipping and throw in a couple bucks for the trouble. I know lots of people have large numbers of these and are afraid they will eat the corals and such so let me know. Thanks.

Man, I personally witnessed them eating my palys, and took out probably a dozen from my tank! Too bad I let them dry out... If I find a significant number, I'll send them by your way.

Does he really eat them, or are you just speculating?

I think I have what you are talking about. So far only in my fuge, but they are trying to get out of the fuge and head to the sump eventually going to the main tank. How would I ship them? I've never shipped anything live before.

Yeah my harlequin loves them. As far as shipping I'm sure you could just send them in a small container or bag filled with a small amount of water and oxygen. They are very hardy. Thanks for the interest!

Doesn't your LFS have chocolate chip stars? They're pretty cheap.

Why buy an animal that only eats one thing if you don't have a nearby (or affordable?) source?

I do have a nearby source for these but they aren't very cheap so I'm just looking for an alternative. Chocolate chip stars are to big and the harlequin only eats a little bit of it which makes the water really crummy. Don't worry about him starving, because he has plenty of stars, but I just wanted to see if i can get them easier and cheaper off of here.

No prob. I hate to assume things about people, but there are so many irresponsible reefkeepers (and others) out there, you know?

I've heard that a chocolate chip star could stay alive for awhile since they just nibble it... Maybe try keeping him in his own little "safe" tank and cut off a piece of his arm every week or two? Not sure how much he'd like it, but I hear that most stars have great regenerative capabilities, and thus, I'd assume, healing as well.

I agree with you, there are lots of irresponsible reefkeepers and that really gets me so I'm with you. I'm hoping to not do the star thing becuase I don't wanna have to cut the star up and I don't have a spare tank right now to do that. Thanks for the input and if it comes down to it, which i dout it will, i will have to get a chocolate chip.

Just get a spare 10-gallon glass tank at Petco or Petsmart for ten bucks.

You can easily keep a few chocolate chip stars in a tank or sump, cut off an arm as needed, keep them well fed and allow them to regenerate the missing pieces. Better than just feeding the whole thing at once.
