Too much flow?Please Help
i have two powerheads on my 46 bow/ with a aqua clear 100 hang on the back. the powerheads generate about 340 gph total. is that too much flow for my one fish. i only have a juvi blue line trigger. should they run all night long? please advise

Actualy that would put your flow on the low side. And you may also considder a different fish for a tank that size. I believe the absolute minimum size tank recomended for any trigger is 75g. In the long run you'd be happier with a fish more appropriatly size... happier and healthier for both you and the fish =)
Edit: also, I don't know of any reason to ever shut your powerheads down. Only time I ever shut any thing off is feeding time.. and even then I just kill my filter and skimmer. |

your flow rate should be at least 10-12x per hour of your tanks volume . So your gph should be at least 460 gph . this does put you on the low side of turn over rate , But when figuring this also count in to the turn over your filtration . Unless your total gph is around 600 You'll want to invest in at least one more power head.
I run my trigger tank a little different then most people do . I'm sure a lot of people will want to tell me what I'm doing is wrong but My fish are all healthy and happy . I have two power headsthat rae on oppositeends of the tank that run 24/7. Each is rated at 300 gph, I have the aireator tubes hooked up and they spray a "small" amount of bubbles . I do this just to help with the gas exchange , keeping the water oxygen rich. Even at night when the macro stops producing oxygen and tank levels will start to fall. I then have two more power heads that are set up on a timer that also run's the normal out put lighting . At 5;30 in the morning the NO lighting and power heads kick on this mimics the sun coming up ans the water movement increasing. then around 7:30 am the Mh kicks on to mimic the sun. Since I'm home all day I will switch the air coming out of the power heads on and off . mainly when I feed as it alows the water to be a little less turbulant . then around 6:30 Pm the MH kicks off and then about 8:30 the no light and the two power heads kick off. I have a small led night light wired into the canopy that is light sensative that comes on and off acording to the light in the canopy and this acts as a moon light . (best 5 bucks I have spent so far ) AS far as my turn over rate goes I have two returns from my sump that are rated @ a head adjusted 625 gph each + 600 from the two power heads for a total of 1825 at night add another 600 durring the day cycle for 2425 gph on a 125 gallon tank . SO I run alomst a 20 x turn over . |
