Elephant nose coral (mycedium)
I just picked up this coral while down in Fl. It appears to be a Mycedium Elephantotis. Do many of you LPS keepers have this type of coral? Any input on lighting, flow, feeding would be great. It's also very difficult to see if the polyps are extending. Does anyone have any pix of theirs with the polyps stretched out in their full glory?
It has kept its color nicely so far. I just want to make sure I'm doing right by it. It is about 6" in diameter. This pic is under my daylights: Thanks for any help, Russ

Wow, 43 views and not one response? I would have bet the ranch that the LPS thread on RC would have been THE place to post this.
Is this coral that rare that nobody has one? I find that hard to believe. Please, somebody with some info on this please respond. Or, should I post this on E. Borneman's forum? Thanks, Russ

Oh yeah, make sure nothing touches it or the other coral will die.

It looks more like an Oxypora than an elephanotis to me. The polyps on the Mycedium are usually cupped. It could just be a bad angle on the pic though.

i have several mycedium and that doesnt look like one to me. as AL G BLENNY said they usually have a bunch of little cups. either way though its care is about the same as any challice. medium lighting with a low to medium flow.
by the angle its difficult to get a good id but a dead giveaway that its a mycedium would be it grows in a bowl shape. if its more like a frisby then id be leaning more towards oxy. either way though cares the same and with t5's you can keep them just about anywhere. its probably best that if it is a oxypora anyways. i can tell you first hand that mycedium are extremely tempermental and slight shifts in lighting, flow, or param changes can cause them to almost loose all thier color overnight and you wind up with brown for a few more weeks |

Al G, Dusty, thanks. I know it is very difficult to determine. Even Eric Borneman couldn't positively Id it. He mentioned that the only way to positively Id it would be from the dead skeleton. I told him I hope I never get to Id it. lol
Anyway, thanks again. I'll treat it like an Oxy, he was leaning in that direction too. Russ
