Unhappy Doggie Help

I'm fostering a Chocolate lab right now and she has come down with kennel cough. She's going to the vet in the morning but she's just plain misserable now. I think her muzzle is even swollen from all the snot. Is there anything OTC I can give her to help with the congestion? I know you can give dogs benydryl (sp?) for allergy symptoms so was wondering if I can use anything. Thanks a bunch guys

I would give benadryl and Motrin to relieve the swelling.

DO NOT give Motrin--very dangerous in dogs. Can cause bleeding stomach ulcers that may perforate, and kidney damage. Benadryl (2 adult tablets if this in an adult lab) may help a bit. If there is nasal discharge keep her nose wiped clean. Keep her drinking--offer chicken or beef broth if necessary. Not much else you can do at home. It sounds like she needs antibiotics.

caryliss, can you use saline nasal spray in dogs to help their noses drain? I wouldn't see why not. Its really the best treatment for humans as well.

You could give the dog a small bit of honey to sooth its throat a bit. But as Caryliss said, there isnt a whole lot that you can do. Similar to us getting the common cold.

This sounds simple, but I had a dog that as a puppy had a cough and my wife took him and sat in a shower with the hot water running and let the dog breath the steam and it helped. Set out side the tub with the shower curtain around you. It helps the lungs. Good luck

Bit late for this probably but about 2 Tablespoons of Robitussin works wonders. Stops the cough, helps with congestion. The only difficulty is getting it down their throats! It's what my vet rec. when we adopted our shelter dog. Good luck!
