woodpecker?
Punks around the neighborhood with a thompson? Only other thing I can think of is the asian longhorned beetle. But they usually only make one hole.

Is that a power line going past it?

phone line. it's on the opposite side of the lean. so it should be fine when the tree falls. although if nature does do it's work by february, i'll be removing the tree myself.

Can't see photobucket pics, but trees that suffer excessively from woodpeckers generally have a heavy insect infestation. It may be chainsaw time.

When I got back on the ground my neighbor (who watched the whole thing) informed me that the local utility will remove trees obstructing their lines, and pay you for the loss of the tree if you agree not to replant under their lines. My neighbor was fortunate the chainsaw was out of gas .............

I had a tree I had to climb to take a few limbs off
They were low to the ground & closed in my small backyard I climbed up & cut the 1st 2 off - small no problem The 3rd was bigger, I had left enough of a stump on one of the others to stand on. So I cut the 3rd until it started to crack & drop Then I shut the saw off & moved to the far side of the tree & hung on CRACK!@! It snapped off & the tree moved quite a bit!! I then realized I was dead tired & my legs were shot Very thirsty & no way down except to climb down I had to sit there for about 1/2 an hour until I could climb down I told my friend about it later, he asked if I tested the tree. WHAT? You know - thump it with a sledge & make sure its not hollow Great, I would have been hugging the tree as it snapped & drove me into the ground I have a Cherry tree to take down out near the telephone pole It borders my neighbors lot, more on his property They asked last year (Town) if they should take it down, my wife didn't know. Checked with my neighbor later & he said OK with him. It's right under the wires & has been hacked to pieces over the years as it has grown It's little more then 3 big twigs with some branches |

You wouldn't want to park your car next to that tree.

i really wish it would just fall over under the weight of the ice. but noooooo. it's one of two unharmed trees. (it has a twin on the other side of the carport)
i counted eight of these turkeys on the two trees yesterday! the only insects i've seen in any numbers near them are boxelders.
