refractometer

Is a refractometer necessary to properly carry out hyposalinity or would a Coralife Deep Six Hydrometer suffice? If a refractometer is necessary what model is the best value? Thanks for the responses.

A refractometer would be the only way that I would attempt it...a swing arm hydrometer is not near accurate enough to do a hypo..I wouldnt trust a swingarm to just check the salinity of my display tank....

Marine Depot has refractometers for sale at a reasonable price (about $50) as does Dr. Fosters & Smith

I only use a refractometer now. My last attempt with the hydrometer (the same one, Deep Six), it said 1.025, when it was 1.030/1.031. Was not impressed. I've heard other complaints of people having issues with the Deep Six one too.

It just isn't worth it when livestock is at risk.

I have this one:
