Can your skimmer be TOO big?

I take delivery tomorrow on a 125 that's going to be a reef tank. I haven't picked my skimmer yet - though I'm leaning towards an Octopus Extreme.

Can a skimmer be TOO big? If skimmer is running on a tank that's smaller than what it's designed for, does it run less efficiently?

You will reach a point of diminished return at some point. If the skimmer is more than you need it will simply not skim at times waiting for something to take out. It's a good way to go IMO.

If you run a skimmer rated for 1000G on a 120, then I would say it's overkill. But it would not be overkill to use a skimmer from one of the highly regarded companies out there that is rated for twice your tank's size.

I did my time there. I still think it's a good skimmer. Not as good as a Beckett, but good.

I use an AquaC EV 120 in a 54. That's about 2 to 3 x the rating. I think the 'ratings' must be done on tanks with two nemos and a nem. Mine fills weekly with an understocked tank, and I am very happy with it.

My DAS fills up weekly on a 16g tank I can't think of any appropriately sized skimmer that would come close or I would be using it.

Answer to the question: No! If your large skimmer isn't pulling out junk add more pooh.
