Ir Remote for Canon

hi, i was wondering if any one has used a universal IR remote with a canon rebel xt? or any other canon for that matter. thanks

I believe the IR sensor is on the front of the camera and can only be used if you are in front of the camera. I'm not sure if you wanted to use this for your tank or not but I thought I would mention it. I use wired remote for all of the tank stuff.

does it auto focus when you use the wired remote shutter?

Yeah - I bought a really cheap one on ebay when I had my XT. It worked fine.

I just got the Canon RC-1 for my XTi and it also works with the XT. The remote sensor is on the front of the camera but it does have good range to the sides and top so you dont have to be directly in front of the camera for it to work. Even with the macro lens on and the camera right at the front glass of my tank, the remote works fine and its pretty cheap.

If the camera is set to autofocus it will do so automatically when you shoot.

cool, that is what i was wondering i didnt know if it would sinc it is useing an external source and not the button. thanks guys now for the decision wireless or wired. i thin i am goin to go with wired becaus ei have been doing alot of top downs lately and i dont think the remote would work through the glass and the water and then through the little tank the camera is in. but i appreciate all of your inputs. thanks

Don't spend the hefty price for a Canon one, pick up one from ebay for super cheap. I've used two of them (one for my old XT and my 30D) and they both worked great. Hong Kong is your friend

I have an XT and use the RC-1 and d4a2n0k is correct; It will reflect off glass pretty consistently but I wouldn't count on it for top down stuff for the obvious reasons stated. It may reflect off the walls of the box but you'd have the angle just right. You'd def be limited by angles of reflection, which would decrease your shooting options (I would think anyway).

I'm gonna do what Rick suggests and pick up a second (wired) unit for tank stuff. The IR is better for shots taken from the front (i.e. shots you want to be in).

The RC-1 is under $30, not exactly a hefty price if you ask me.
