20L, r. gramma, and new fish

hey...

so i'm finally getting my 20L in order, after it has sat for almost a year with just LR & my r. gramma.

i'd love to add another fish, but i'm not sure how it would do. when i purchased the gramma it was for my original 10g. the LFS owner was talking too me about the tank and, to make a long story short, told me that the gramma was too aggressive & territorial to add more fish then him. at the time, that was fine because i didn't really want to add more than one fish to a 10 anyway. now i have a little more room, it'd be nice to add another fish. like most things, depending on who you talk to, or what you read, you get conflicting info.

so what do you guys think? the gramma has been in a tank by himself (or herself...whatever the case may be) for going on 4 years now. any thoughts? i don't even have a clue as to what i would add, haven't got that far along in the plan...maybe a clown...i don't know...

thanks

Mine is doing fine with a clown and a purple firefish I just added.

He did a bit of "I'm big and bad" swimming around with his mouth open, but for the most part has been civil.

You could always change the rock work or something to throw the gramma off.

Royal Grammas will act all tough but usually end up being the ones retreating in a confrontation. Ragardless, it's always a good idea to keep things as peaceful as possible. If I were you, I'd look into getting a bottom/substrate dwelling fish like a goby or blenny (not a midas), or jawfish. RGs tend to hover in the water column and get annoyed by tankmates that "swim" into their territory, so picking a fish that prefers a different zone of the tank will probably keep territorial aggression from being an issue.

I would go with something like a Checkered Perchlet (Plectranthias). They stay small, and from my experiences they are very peaceful.
