sump and chiller question
My new tank is 375 gals. What size sump would I need to have for a tank that size? and What size chiller do I need? There is a used 1/2 hp chiller for sale here and if it will work I might spring for it.

I have a 300 and use a 100gal rubbermaid stocktank for the sump and another for the refuge. There is plenty of volume for power outages. If the water gets to high, the refuge will take on some of the water also. I also have a 1/2hp heatpump, which is a chiller and a heater. It does fine with 4 400w halides and 4 large pumps. I put the chiller in the crawl space of our basement, which is always cool. I am sure that helps. If your chiller is going some place where it will be warm or hotter than ideal, you would need to go larger.

100-125 gallon sump should work well, but the larger the better, 1/2 HP chiller will work well on teh tank as well.

The chiller I'm thinking of getting is 1 yaer old, and around half the retail price. It is a red sea. And has a built in controler.
I'm really new to this so what do I use to control my heater? Will the chiller controler also control the heater? Also how long do these thing last? Is half the retail a good buy for a 1 year old chiller?

IMO a RedSea 1/2 hp chiller will not cut it for a 375 with halides. Maybe with PCs at best. It is tough to swallow the cost of a good chiller (size and quality) but it will be money well spent. I used to run a 1/4 hp on my 180 with halides and it ran a lot. Recently I upgraded to a converted A/C unit chiller and have never been happier. So please take your time researching it and some of the guide charts that chiller manufacturers provide are just a best case scenario starting point. What works for one doesn't always work for another. MM

So I know this is not the best forum to post this question in, but here it goes. What brand and size chiller would you recomend for my tank. Figure I'll have lots of light , as I want to have SPS, LPS, clams, and fish.

JeffP, how is yours plumbed? I have a stocktank also and am thinking about trying some baffles to seperate things a bit.
Do you have baffles and if so or not, how is yours laid out? Pics? Tim
