diy skimmer

i have a seaclone 120 skimmer. i hate it. also i have been looking around and have seen a lot of skimmers with same basic designs...yet better external eqpt.? i have only owned this skimmer and as i look at the other skimmers i think "if i know what all those things did i could prolly soup this hoopty up a little"
so my question is can i do something to help this poor excuse for a skimmer or is it doomed to someday skim some nano i set-up?
if i could find some diy skimmer plans i would be cool with that too...but haven't any luck yet.

not the best skimmer, get a D&D marine typhoon, $68 drfosters, less on ebay it would do a great job on your 40 gallon tank.
