Probally a supid question -_-
OK the question is can i keep a pair of seahorses in my refugium for my 29 gal reef tank. the refugium is about 35 gallons of the 55 total, and is split into 3 different areas, the first is live rock, the second and largest is a 4 inch sand bed, then the last is a section full of marco algae. i was hoping i could place some live rock in the area with sand and some sort of plantlife for the seahorses to anchor to. the flow through the area is low and the lighting is 2 pc fixtures.
any help on this thought would be great, thanks |

IMO it depends on a few things. Most reef tanks run on the warm side - seahorses do best when kept below 74F, which most corals, etc do not like. If your temps don't go above 74F AND if the "large" area of the refugium is rather "large", then it may be do-able to keep a single pair of seahorses. Keep in mind they are MESSY eaters and will make it a struggle to keep your water in pristine condition - meaning your reef tank may suffer.
A single pair of seahorses shouldn't be in anything less than a 20g tank - even that is pushing it. So, if the refugium is split up so the "large" portion is about the size of a 20 gal tank AND the temp issue isn't a problem - then yes, it's something that could be done if planned correctly. Tom |
