Thanks Rob. The funny thing is, later on this year, I will probably be able to buy the same colony for under $100 I am not sure what I'm going to do with all these polyps!

hehe...I know which one it is ....and I am not telling.

Maximus I would drip acclimate and give it low light and low flow. Considering the piece, wild caught and fresh shipped, just go through some extra precautions, I mean an hour or so of acclimating won't hurt.

Jen,
I already let the cat out of the bag. I coudn't hold it in any longer! The manager from saltwaterfish had called me yesterday and told me of its origins. Of course we all knew it came from indopacific somewhere. Supposedly, the collector kept the colony for a couple weeks and sent it to saltwaterfish.com. They kept the colony for 10 days and sold it to me.

I questioned the guy, and got this response:

"As all coral experts know, it is hard to indentify corals , let alone by pictures alone. I bought the coral as an acanthastrea, therefore I am selling it as one. My wholesaler has the cites and the invoice that states that it is an acanthastrea. I appreciate your opinion, but as I said before I bought the coral as an acan so I am selling it as one PERIOD. Have a nice day."

That's funny, you think if CITES knew it was an Acan they would have confiscated it. Too many gray areas with what IS and ISN'T illegal.

LOL, LOL a big fat 0 bids!!!

Acans are perfectly legal to import into the US.

They are only illegal to export out of australia and japan as far as I know.

Baja, my understanding was that only a certain amount of Acans were allowed in per year. I could be wrong though

does anyone know if a biology student who applies for the proper permits for "research" purposes is allowed to export them. there are several things that are illegal to harvest out of florida that we are allowed to harvest and bring back as long as we have the proper parepwork. any ideas if this will work for this scenario too?

Acclimation is done. Wow, this colony is huge! I stopped the polyp count at 105! Here's a pic of it after 10 minutes in my tank. The polyps aren't fully out yet btw. I expect them to be a lot fuller soon.

I've seen him missrepresent a whole lot of corals, actually, here's a handy link to report him to ebay, hopefully they'll do something...

I reported the "favia kid" to ebay and I encourage all other self respecting reefers to do the same. I sent the the whelk id's to ebay with my complaint but the only way this will get pulled is if they recieve several reports-let's put the favia kid out of commission!

Hey Maximus, how did that colony handle being chopped up so quickly?

Did you lose any heads?

Hi Bugsy,
So far so good. I have not lost a single polyp. All the polyps woofed down mysis last night so that is a great sign. I'll definitely let them heal a bit before I ship.

right on, I had a buddy cut a wild colony and he lost the heads on both sides of the cut! It was booty

It amazes me that these corals will beg for food right after being quartered. We had a 1/2 head eating the same night. Cool stuff
