SPS frag tank questions

I am planning to use a 20 long with a Dual Satellite compact flourescent fixture (2x65 watts). I was thinking I would use eggcrate to position the frags in the middle-upper part of the tank. Since the tank is only 12 inches tall wouldn't this be sufficient light for sps frags?

I wouldnt use any PC lighting for a SPS tank. They may survive.

I would say if you have perfect water quality that stay a constant perfect then they may survive better. A softie tank with some stoney coral would be better.

Under T-5 lighting they do much better and in MH lighting they thrive.

pretty sure most lower end retros are for around 200 dollars, build a little canopy and slap one of those in there.

Best thing to do is go to your (local) area reef club forum (see the list of forums here) and post a Want-to-Buy thread or browse around for deals. The deals are out there, you just have to look.

what about an Ocean Light 150 watt HQI pendant fixture or perhaps the 250 watt version. Would this work in a tank that is 30" long??

I have 2x65W PCs on my 10G tank. The SPS survive and encrust a bit but their growth rate is slow to none. The montipora grow slowly, my green slimer acropora encrusted on the plug but then stopped growing. Color isn't very good either. Those lights would be great for a softy or zoanthid frag tank, though.

I have the same fixture as my fuge light. I also have a PAR meter. Using the 2x65w 6500k sunlight bulbs the par 6" under water is around 100. Not sure how high up the light are...they are mounted on the legs you get with them. Not really enough for SPS, but I do have my rics under them on a shelf in my fuge.
