I've always been partial to 5-Star notebooks myself.

who ever it is in SE asia that makes the laptops for dell does an ok job. our biggest issue is the damned hitachi/ibm hard drives they use that fail constantly.
IBM's are renound for their reliablity and expense.

vpr is a bestbuy company, they've since been renamed (again) and are being sold in bright orange boxes

hp/compaq are basically the same now, but i still tend to show preference to compaq

toshiba makes good systems, but i've never been a big fan

so i'd make the decision between ibm and dell if it were me.

Toshiba is the top of the line, expensive though.
Sony Vaio is right there with them, expensive though.

I recommend either.

Over the past few years I've had Dell's, IBM's, Toshiba's (convertible) no-names and currently use a compaq/hp. Never a problem with any of them except the screen on the Toshiba bit the dust. I am not easy on laptops and travel with them frequently.

Sounds like a heat or bad memory problem Sir.

I've been in IT for over 8yrs... I deploy Dell Laptops here at work and can vouch for them and the customer service.

Ibm laptops are the top of the line but, a little too much for some home users's pocket books.

Toshiba's I've seen and used 4 models 1 didn't suck. That was the tablet PC Protégé 3500.

Sony Viao... Well the CEO's son wanted these. I have 2 sitting in my desk draw that absolutely BLOW CHUNKS. I wouldn't let my 3yr play pong on them.

HP laptops are your next bet for "I wish I had a Dell" you get what you pay for. Since Compaq has been absorbed they are a little better but still...

IBM or Dell...

If you’re not a road warrior then a large screen is NICE... but if yo plan to travel the 14-15in is the bomb...

What else do you want? I surely will give your real world answers no something from a Marketing proposal.

For your wife,

centrino model
http://pctorque.com/2885.php

or regular P4 model
http://pctorque.com/4380.php

would be pretty good.
If I would probably go with p4 model. So at least 4 years later, it will be able to run window 2008 or whatevery operating system will be at the time.
