What substrates to use in Eheim's (LR rubble) ?

I have an Ehiem 2224 model that is rated at 75 gallons on my 55g w/30g sump and 15g refugium. I have been using all substrates the Eheim comes with, also the carbon sponges and the other sponges that came with it. I was thinking of dumping the substrates that come with the filter and using LR rubble that is really small to put in both subtrate compartments. I am just trying to get feedback from other people who have tried this method and would enjoy anyone to give me pointers. Also I was curious if anyone else is having sucess in doing the LR rubble instead of the Eheim subtrates that are provided.

If anyone else know of any other modifications to these cannister filters to improve there performance I would appreciate your input on it.

Thanks
-Nika
