what does ORA stand for?

Hi, I was just wondering and wanting to clarify what "ORA" meant. Is ORA the company that raises tank bred clowns? I have seen A. Ocellaris, and A. Percula both referred to as ORA's. I am a bit confused.

Oceans, Reefs and Aquariums. It's the company name of who bred and raised those clowns to sell to your LFS, which in turn sells to you.

Edit: They're just one breeder of tank bred, there are others out there but ORA's probably the biggest.

So if someone says "you're picking up some ORA's" that just means tank raised clowns in general right?

ORA Ocellaris would be tank raised ocellaris'?

ORA Ocellaris would be Ocellaris clowns that were bred by ORA.

They are very reputable breeders. I know they breed clowns and aquaculture corals. The ORA animals I have seen have been amazing and more expensive than just your every day tank bred stuff.

nope in fact all the clowns at petco are from ORA

Yeah thats news to me! The petco nearest to me has such nasty tanks, and when I go in there I feel so sorry for the fish.

dont get me wrong ora supplies quality fish its petcos fault that they have nasty tanks

ORA's quality fluctuates quite a bit, IME. It wasn't uncommon to receive entire shipments that had lymphocystis or brooklynella upon arrival. In fact, they would go through "phases" of these diseases, often with several shipments having similar results.

ORA is part of the Harbor Branch Research Institute, which also houses Florida Atlantic University's marine biology program. This is also where the deep-sea research subs (I may be mistaken, but I believe the ALVIN series were built there) reside and where they are maintained. It's in Ft. Pierce, Florida, which was hit heavily by two hurricanes a few years ago, hence problems with disease.
It's not just a clam and coral and fish farm. When you deal with ORA some of that money goes to research and conservation. It is not a non-profit. It funded mainly by bioscience and geoscience firms. Drug companies and oil companies.

A majority of the deep-sea footage you've seen was filmed by these guys.
