Speaking of, I have been talking to the wife about taking a drive down to the keys for my first dive. I have been practicing in my pool with a snorkel (not that has anything to do with) Has any of you been down that way for a dive lately? Am I looking at a few hundred for rental? I guess I could pick up the phone tomorrow and give a call down there.

Check out the scuba forum here on RC. I hear there are actual forums on this board besides the Lounge. People may just be pulling my leg though.

Q, that isn't my leg.

We used to go to Fla every year for a vacation/diving, but we brought our own gear.

If on a dive boat it can cost $50 each just for the dive - or more w/gas prices hike.
Our local LFS (MA) rents gear for $48 a day including tanks & weight
Not sure on FLA

One thing we ran into, they were VERY strict about being back on the boat within 1 hour of dropping into the water. Dive wasn't that deep, but 45' is good for color

We didn't do much research, we just wanted to dive
Did you just get certified?

Not yet. I was looking in the phonebook and there seems to be a shop right down the road I will be stopping in tomorrow for questions and so forth. I have a proline center console just sitting on the side of my house and would like to put it to good use. I have a friend thats interested in going as well which is a good thing. My wife says she aint goin nowhere near that water. She's doesnt like the critters I will take my time with this, I dont want to rush into and skip learning something that could endanger me.

I'm not sure how it is down there at all places, but most (if not all) around here will not rent you gear without seeing a Certification card due to liability issues
In some cases they won't even fill a tank you bring in
The local shop does have some paintball players who use tanks to refill their guns - no cert - and they get the tanks filled

I don't know of any boat that will bring you out to dive without seeing a Cert card

Some places will charge you a fee for a "Resort Course" - usually only see this abroad on vacation
This fee is pretty close to getting certified

Or are you in the process of Cert & just need to complete your Open water dives?

If the fee is close to resort fee for getting the cert I will just get the cert and just have it. I have a 2 week vac that will be up shortly, I will use that time to get certified most definately. I mainly want to dive to shoot a video I have always wanted to do. But I'm sure the first time I go I will get hooked, like with anything else. I am not educated at all with the certification down here, the local shop I am sure will brief me.

Getting certified includes 4 open water dives - anywhere from $200 - $350 depending upon shop & what they include

Resort course I took in Cozumel was close to $300 as I recall & included 3 dives. I was hooked after the 2nd dive
The 1st dive I was a little nervous, very tired after & dry throat
2nd day I rented a camera & had a blast

Doesn't male-bonding usually involve kissing? I'm confused.
