Eggcrate for octo lid?

Hello all,

I have been reading up on Bimacs on this forum and on TONMO.com. I cant seem to find anyone using egg crate for a top on an octo tank. Are the holes too big? If anyone has tried this please give me some info. Starting my first Bimac tank.

Probably too big, I'd line it with that plastic needlepoint mesh from a place like AC Moore.

I'm in PA too, where are you getting your bimac from?

If a ceph tries to jam itself through a hole that is too small it can end up injuring itself, just FYI.

That's why I figured fine needlepoint. Eggcrate is big enough that they would probably try to get through, I cant imagine them trying to get through a hole that isnt much bigger than a pencil-tip.

I've seen tanks octoproofed with mesh that was larger than needlepoint plastic, but I'd like to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the replies, I have really not started searching for one yet . I have sent an E-mail to "That Fish Place"to see if they could get me one.I will also talk to some LFS's .I dont know if this is a good time of year to get one or not. I figure I will get my tank ready and go from there. Mfish are you in the Pittsburgh area?

Nope, Philly region. I'm looking for a bimac, but I'd basically take anything I can get at this point

I use panty hose and electric tape. Just cut the hose and it streches all around the things that may be coming out of the top of your tank. Also if you have an over the back filter you can put it under the filter to seal it completely and the water drains right on through. It really works.

A younger bimac would walk through eggcrate like an open door.

Fiberglass window screen is also a cheap solution for sealing gaps and inlets.

There's currently bimacs if you look at the availability thread on the other site. With cephs you have to strike when the iron is hot, otherwise you might be waiting months or a year!
