Well after redoing the plumbing in flex, adding some more baffles, rearranging the sump and changing the drain standpipe (all of which has been a PITA) my tank still sounds like crap!

Now I turn on the skimmer and it whistles.

What am I doing so wrong here?

Where is the most noise coming from Dennis?

It is quite possible to design a tank to be quiet. It can take some work and sometimes money though.

Bob, the only thing that is noisy with ours is the pump for the skimmer, and that could be quieted down if we had placed it on a mouse pad or something similar. When we unplug the skimmer, all we hear is a soothing flowing of water..nothing that would drive you crazy at all!

We had REALLY loud noise when we first fired it up, but Bob made some adjustments to the standpipes and it really made a LOT of difference.
Also, the guy I bought the used tank from. I have never in my life heard anything so quiet. He has a 180g tank, and hasn't finished his stand yet, so it's still wide open underneath, and I didn't even hear any flushing noise. So, they really don't have to be noisy at all.
One of the reasons I want to get the plumbing done the right way the first time with the tank I'm setting up now.

I guess most of the noise is from the bubbling and gurgling of the water entering the sump. Now the air intake for the skimmer whisltes too.

I can handle some of the noise but it sounds like the washing machine.

Do you have it going underneath the water level? That should quiet it down. I don't know about the skimmer or how AquaC works.

Do you have any pictures of your plumbing? I'm looking for pictures of everyones plumbing, so I can try and do a good job with a tank I just bought.

How come you have a ball valve in that picture coming from the skimmer section T'ing into the return line? Doesn't the water overflow into the return section? I'm sure there's a reason....I just don't understand plumbing at all, so I just want to know why.

Its not coming from the skimmer section it going to the skimmer section. Its a bleed off line for the return pump so I can control the amount of flow back into the tank.

Maybe instead of having the tubing running straight down into the tank, you can make it more of a horizontal run and then just have the last little bit going straight down into the tank. Maybe that would quiet it down since you seem to feel that's where most of the noise is coming from.
