I'm almost positive that's correct, Dwaine. Sometimes called spindleweed.

FWIW, I get bits of it from time to time.

i agree with dwzm Amanda, i think you should go ahead and put the rock in and just fill the sand in around it.

OK everyone, an update! I received my sand an hour after my rock. Rock came FEDEX and sand UPS. I rinsed the sand first, it is totally awesome, jet black. Nothing blacker in my eyes! Filled the tank, added the salt, measured SG with my refractometer after an hour of mixing, and added my rock. The rock had absolutly no smell what so ever. Not even the slightest hint of anything. It was fully cured. Within about 5 minutes of having the rock in my tank, I began to see 1 crab and 1 bristleworm. I"ll take some close ups later. I have to run to the LFS for the thermometer another PH and some carbon. I'll post pics in a couple hours, I promise!!!

Amanda, where did you get the black sand? what kind? I've been thinking about getting it for my 72 but I've heard it's a pain to keep clean and really sharp.

My 15g nano with a coralife PC fixture 65w lighting (4.3w per gal), Eheim filter and Aquclear 202 Power Head, ran me like 130-140. The JBJ 12g Nano-Cube has 24w of PC lighting (2w per gal) which I think is just enough lighting for doing softies, and the JBJ 12g Deluxe Nano-Cube has 48w of PC lighting (4w per gal) which is pretty good. The regular 12g Nano-Cube is like 99.00 and the Deluxe 12g Nano-Cube is 159.00 plus shipping of course. At stores they run like 129.00 and 199.00 which is to much I think so your better off buying it online. The new 24g Nano-Cubes come with 72w of PC lighting (3w per gal) which is not to bad and they run like 280.00, but are very cool indeed.

i think so too. my LFS sells them for 149.99 and 219.99 respectively.

on the other hand my 20 gallon with 130w PC, DiY refugium, 3 powerheads was about $275.

i payed about $40 too much for the lights, as i didnt utilize the web

Wow...two pages already!

Amanda, I think adding the cocktail shrimp tomorrow is your best bet if you don't notice a cycle (like what we talked about on the phone).

This should be a good thread. I love the jbj shapes, and you do such a great job on your tanks. I was real critical of your setup before, but you have great husbandry skills and I now follow your threads for ideas and techniques.

On the left of this picture is what the sand will look like, on the right is settlement from the rock...

Nano is now cycling and the jugs are mixing for the water change on the 75 tomorrow.

Now, info.

The sand is AMAZING!!!! It's the blackest black of black!!!!! It's sugar grain sized and soft as a baby's bottom. I love it!

The rock was ordered from Dr. Mac corals as cured Tonga rock.

I have found many featherdusters already along with one live mithrax crab.

The sand doesn't look completly black right now because there is a lot of settlement on it.

I have no idea how many horses I will get, I have a lot of reading to do while the tank cycles.
I do know that I want a lot of fancy inverts, sexy shrimp, porcelin crabs etc. I know I want some kind of goby, maybe purple firefish. I want the little blue electric hermits. I want lots of coco worms and fancy feather dusters. Yuma, ricordea, sun polyps and colorful algaes and plants. We'll see how things develope.

I haven't noticed any kind of smell at all from the tank yet, if still nothing tomorrow, I might throw a cocktail shrimp in.

That's all for now, I'll update tomorrow.

Amanda
