Storage and longevity ???

Just to open the discussion further -- how should the sand be stored and how long will it last before initial use?? I bought 6 bags last November and have it stored in my basement (dark & cool) on top of a large (6 gal) milk crate.

I'm assuming the normal standards of dark, cool, dry, and as airtight (oxygen free) as possible. Is there anything that would spoil the sand over time? I guess it would still be good 10-20 years later if it didn't get contaminated?? Any thoughts on preparation before use after long long term storage?

I would say that the sand would last for 1000k millennia or so... give or take 50%....

It is just sand....

southdown sand

Just wanted to say "THANKS" for the info about Southdown sand. Really appreciate the update. How much should be used if a person also uses CC? Can the two substrates be used together? I have a 45 gal. reef with 31/2" CC, but would like to add.
Thanks, again.

Use this link (from the search above) and do a search in Dr. Ron's forum for replacing CC with sand. There is tons of info.

I got lucky and a fellow reefer in my area had some brought to him. He had an exrea bag and i snagged it up for my 29G. I work for a local pet store, and im thinking of asking my boss to looking into ordering a pallet of the stuff, that would keep the local reefers happy, and it is great for reptiles also, so that might be a bonus into getting him to order it.

Add Hagerstown, MD to this list. I was there a few weeks ago and bought 250 lbs. At that time they had 1.5 PALLETS of the stuff left in their garden center. I plan on getting more for my refugium today. I'll let you know how much is left latter. Also, the guy I spoke to originally from the garden department in Hagerstown is first and foremost a reefer also. He said he "tries to make sure they have AT LEAST 2 skids on hand year-round." Direct quote from a fellow reefer, so I'm pretty sure it is valid.

Kevin, SD is just as good for a fish only tank. I will try to find the pic and post it here.

Not sure if this will help anyone in their search for SD, but when I lived in Rochester NY (about 3 years ago) I bought SD at Toys R' Us. Not sure if they still carry it though. I still remember dumping it into my sons sand box thinking "man this looks just like the stuff I use in my tank".

Shame that HD does not have the bagging plant in Ft. Pierce and sell it locally in Florida.

Thumbs up CALCITE

A friend here in CANADA purchased a product call CALCITE. it is exactly the same as SOUTHDOWN in size and color. He has done the vinegar test and the stuff has been in his tank for 6 months.
The stuff was like $5 a 50lb bag. He bought it from BUILDERS WAREHOUSE. and I think it is available at RONA.
