I got several corals on my GV rock, I thought they were dead but a month later 2 of them came back. It is round and kinda looks like a brain with lots of hairy polyps. I don't think I will order again though. 7 months later I am still hunting mantis and crabs. I lost 2 muscles but the other 8 are still alive. It did make placing the rock hard a task.

I do think that the GV or TBS rock will kick start your system, but I would reccomend just buying 3 or 4 rocks and a couple boxes of fiji..

I dont like the fiji. It just seems like dead rock with coraline algea on it. Dont get me wrong, if you cover it in expensive corals it will eventually look very pretty, but that is not what I am going for. I want a natural environment with worms, crabs, pods and other stuff. My tank will outlive the mantis if I never catch him.

My little guy is begining to grow on me. It is sorta like having an eagle in your tank. I hate that he might kill something, but hey the odds of him getting any of the fish I plan on getting is slim, and the other things he is killing are inexpensive. If I keep him fed with shimp, I dont expect he will mess with much. I do know which rock he lives in so if he causes major problems I will kill the one rock with a dip, but I dont want to as the rock has some very nice hitchhiker corals!

I think it's when the fish are sleeping that he can hunt them down. yours might be small now, but I'm sure it'll grow pretty big...appetite too.
Don't kill the guy or anything...some people want to keep them in separate tanks. You may want to do that. Keep him in a 10g or something. Otherwise ask here if anyone wants to trade...or could always bring him to the LFS for credit.

The Mantis won't kill any fish even when they get bigger. at least mine haven't in the last 10 months. They don't even like the taste of fish.
I have a tank setup with a mated pair of Mantis with three Damsels.
I feed them frozen brine a couple time week and they know when it's feeding time and come right out to get their food before making a run for cover.
I tried feeding them Silver sides and they won't touch it or any other fish meat that I've tried to feed them.
The only thing they eat everytime is Mysis or fresh store bought shrimp, and crab.
They will on occasion eat krill and octopuss but most of the time they just shove it away and wait for the good stuff.

You will need to closely monitor water params to keep all that stuff alive, especially the Anemone.
The rock looks great! Good luck with your tank, you are off to a good start!

Yeah, I am following the TBS technique, which is water change whenever ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate get high.

That is a 30 gallon long, and the package is the 30 gallon package. Worth every penny!!! I sorta wish now I had started with a 55, but it would have not fit in the spot where we wanted the tank. I think I will probably setup a 20 gallon sump to add water volume. I am happy with the size of the tank, just wish I had abit more water for stability.

Wow! You got a Mag-Float as a Hitchhiker?!?! AWESOME!!!! I've got one too, but I had to get it from the LFS.

Sereiously, though, that rock looks GREAT! I would definitely buy rock from that place. The stuff I got from LiveAquaria was lame.

I got 50 lb of boat run rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater too, and is very nice. lots of critters and there still alive after cycling. Did yours have barnacles too? I don't know if they like low flow or wheather I should feed them or anything about them really.

Tampa Bay Saltwater - florida aquacultured rock. They ship in water. Other places just ship in damp newspaper. I hear this stuff is good.

I have Gulf View (Florida also), but just got Tonga and Lalo rock from liveaquaria.com - I'd recommend that highly!!! Very odd shapes - very cool.
