Well I had my first disaster today. I dropped my light in the tank!!!! Luckily it was off and did not submerge totally. I had to take it apart and blowdry it. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! That Mantis has me on edge!

Second shipment is ordered and set for delivery on Friday! Latest update:

We saw a new crab. A hariy little bugger. Also have a fairly large brittle star looking thing. Hairy legs five of them, and red circular stripes on them. Also have lots of feather dusters poping up all over the base rock. Have anenome looking things that come out of round circular hard coral structures at night. Almost translucent.

Pictures to come!

I purchased some TBS rock for my first tank about a year ago. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I'll be buying from them again. The rock is very alive, that I don't disagree, but it's almost to alive. There are ore oysters, clams, and mullusks on there that make it very difficult to do coral placement or aquascape. These creatures open and close with a good bit of strength. they can move rocks and other stuff, also very hard to get off the rock. The sponges are quite cool, i don't disagree to this, but they also make it a bit hard for coral placement. When they start growing they take up quite a bit of room and just make it hard to put anything near them. From now on, i'll be buying fiji.

That is what I wanted. I guess it depends on what you want. A tank that looks like a garden, or a tank that looks like nature.

That starfish is a serpent star, I'm pretty sure. I got several of those as hitch-hikers in my TBS rock. Don't stress out so much about the mantis. I have at least two, if not three of them, in my tank right now. They're the N. Gondylactus type and won't bother your fish. You'll probably also be getting a condylactus anemone with your second shipment. The jury's still out on that one of whether I'm going to keep him or not, I had a 6-lined wrasse that disappeared that I'm looking sideways at the anemone to see if it snagged the wrasse.

The hairy crabs you see are most likely gorilla crabs. If they have hairy legs and black tips on their claws, find ways to get rid of them. They're not good guys.

The little 'translucent' anemones you are finding are aiptasia anemones. I had quite a few pop up. But the 4 peppermint shrimp that came with the second shipment of The Package is definitely keeping the aiptasia in control, and the bigger ones I've been giving lemon juice injections to to kill them. They're pest anemones that you don't really want taking over your tank.

You mentioned that your second shipment is scheduled for Friday...Ummm...you may want to reconsider that since you just got your first shipment a few days ago. Don't rush things. Just because you don't see an ammonia spike at the moment, that doesn't mean that it's not cycling. Give it some time to cycle and settle down. Rich FROM TBS also told you to slow down a little, and he DOES know what he's talking about. Just take some time and enjoy all the little barnacles, do a little mantis hunting (Better to try and get him out of 40lbs of rock than 80lbs of rock, which you'll probably end up getting one or two more in that shipment TOO.), and let the tank settle. Though the invertebrates you'll be getting in the 2nd shipment are pretty hardy, they're still pretty sensitive and if your cycle isn't complete or your bacteria count isn't high enough in your sand bed, you could end up killing some of your critters. *smiles* Sorry to sound like I'm lecturing or scolding, but I did exactly what TBS told me to do and I'm not a bit sorry that I did it that way. Just trying to help you out...hate for you to have spent over $400 on your rock and watch it suddenly go to sludge on you...

Hope that helps.

Cheers!

Andy

Here are the latest pictures:

The tanks chemistry is looking good. Nitrates are at about 5, Ammonia and Nitrite are at 0. I have been feeding the tank some raw krill, and the leftover has not caused a spike so I feel good about my bacteria load so far. I did pull out the rock that the Mantis lives in to try to remove him (im sure you can guess my sucess on this), anyway there was some dead sponge on the bottom of the rock that I removed. EWWWW it stank! Made me feel good tho, as even the dead sponge was not causing an ammonia spike.

Can I remove small feather dusters and relocate them if I need to place a piece of rock on top of another peace that has them on it?

No sump. I may make a hang on refiugium for feeding and dosing of Kalk out of a AquaClear Filter.

Did that Hawaiian Feather duster come as a hitch-hiker? If so, nice score...though I didn't think they were indigenous to the Gulf area.

Cheers!

No, I added the feather duster. ;-)

I know, I know, let the flames begin. It was an impulse buy, and was very cheap!

I agree with this - In the long run it makes it difficult when you're ready to have corals. I'm at that stage. That's why I got a 2nd shipment of LR 6 months later. I got Tonga and Lalo from LiveAquaria. I'm pulling out the LR with the mussels on it - probably make a 2nd tank.

Get the Gorilla Crab out of there. Do a search on Gorilla. There are ways to trap them.

You should have dipped your rock in saltwater at 1.030 salinity for 1 minute to get out the mantis shrimp out of the rock. You may want to do that now if you do have a mantis. they WILL kill fish.

It is funny all the different opinions about what to do. TBS says never dip the rock in high salinity water. This small smasher I have could not kill a fish if he had to. I have watched him for a few days, and now have him eating raw shrimp. He graps barnacles, but that is about it. I will eventually trap him, but it is no hurry.

yeah, opinions vary.
I have gulf-view rock and I did the high salinity dip. gulf-view and TBS are basically the same. I don't understand the harm in it - it didn't hurt my rock and I let it dip for a lot longer than 1 minute.

The dip will kill some corals. All the sensitive corals on your Gulf-View would be dead by the time it got to you shipped in wet newspaper. TBS is shipped in water, and if the shipment goes well lots of corals survive. I have a ton in my tank just on the base rock.
