Help with 20 long

I have a 20 long that I want to set up. I'm looking at keeping zoos, rics, some inverts and maybe a fish or two. I've been searching around on Nano-reef.com and the nano forum on here and it seems everyone has something different. My main ?'s are

Do I want to put a MH fixture on like the 150w Sunpod or if I should go t-5? (I might put a clam in later)

What kind of HOB filter, or other filter would be good with it?

If anyone has some pictures of their setups and can post them up....that would be Awesome!

I had a beautiful 20g long with a pair of tru perc clowns.and a yashia goby-shrimp pair. I had a pc light with 3-65w bulbs, i was able to keep all zoos, rics, some montis, a digitata, and a maxima clam. Since the tank is shallow you will not have a problem with light intensisty, but maybe so with algae blooms. Try to keep nutrients low by not feeding as much, and light periods around 7hrs a day. I will go with the t-5's because they produce intense light in a smaller amount of space with low heat production. You will probably run into heat issues if you get the halide.
Good luck

They are retros. One from Hello lights and one from Reefgeek. The one from Reef Geek is using an ice cap reflector.

On my 20 long I have a CPR bakpak 2 skimmer with bubble trap box, and a medium size CPR hang on back fuge with rock rubble, LS, and cheato. Right now, I have a 2X65watt PC light, but I will be switching to a 36" Tek T5 next week. I find the skimmer/fuge combo to be great at keeping the water parameters at constant levels. Hope this helps

I got it used from a member on RC, but they are for sale on the Dr. Foster web site, the one I have runs about $99 new. I would highly recommend it.... but dont forget to paint the back of your tank! (i hate looking through my rear glass lol)

I'm making a long tank right now.... went with 150W MH and at least 2 T5 tubes running along side the MH.

We'll see how it goes..

Rosseau....a 20L? Are you doing pendant MH or did you get a whole fixture with everything in it?

15L

I should really have just gone for 20. I'm trying to save space and keep it "portable".

I'm retrofitting ballasts and everything into a canopy that I'm going to make.

Though, a few dual t5 MH fixtures looked pretty nice.

I want SPS and clams. So... that's what the MH is for, otherwise I would have probably stayed all T5 (not that they can't support SPS and clams).

Currently I am looking at putting this tank underneath my 55 and I think that MH's would create too much heat and my 55's sand bed would get really warm. I might have to just get a new stand. So many options.....

A new stand for a 20g long is not that expensive.

I have been happy with my 150 HQI on my 20g. I can keep almost anything in there, some corals don't do so well towards the top of the tank but the Mh is only 5" above the water. I use a 14k with no atnics, the tank is lovely.

I also have a 20g sump that hides all the equipment.

The 30" T5's are not high output so you would need to go with a 24' fixture and figure out how to mount it.

Personally I prefer the MH. Shimmer is gret.
