blue hippo tang color
I am thinking about getting a couple of tangs for a 120 AGA. Currently I am leaning towards a yellow tang and a blue hippo tang. However, the LFS has a large blue hippo tang which looks like it is losing its color. I wonder how common the color loss on a blue hippo is or if the LFS is just not taking good care of it in terms of water quality or food. It is in a big display tank.

Having nice Tangs is all about food and water quality.
Most important to there color is food. Tangs are veggie eaters but they will eat almost anything that goes in the tank. You need to get them eating a large diet of seaweeds. I use Julian springs sea veggies. I normally always have some on a clip for them to graze on. I will put more on about an hour before feeding the meaty items. This way there already full of veggies and don't eat as much meat. My Regal (hippo) Tang is a very nice deep blue and the yellow on the fin tips is nice and bright. I aslo have a prize powder blue that is just ausome. Not only are they nicely colored but there FAT too. They eat like pigs, the seaweed really gets ripped up when there hungery. Water quality is important, they get HLLD easy. My Regal got ich over a year ago and had to be treated in a QT tank. She got HLLD, while her color came back the holes in her head still to this day have not healed up all the way. She does look better and better each month so someday her scares will heal. I have had the Regal for about 2 years now and the powder blue over 6 months. |
