Mag Supplement
I have Randy's articles on Mg and making your own supplement using mag flake and what not.
My question is despite the mag flake...if I were to use a Mg supplement of these what should it be? Why? Are there any problems using them? Seachem Reef Advantage Magnesium:> http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=SC1513 ESV Magnesium:> http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=EV2170 I have used ESV. I use regular old INstant Ocean so I have to add CA and MG to the mix before water is changed out. The ESV ran out relatively fast. Does the seachem last longer/more potent? Are both good supplements? Is it pure MG or do they contain lots of impurities? Let me know..any help is appreciated. |

Actually those supplements may be more "pure" than mag flake.
Magnesium has a problem with having ammonia IIRC. So a pure source may be to your advantage. Although I dont know the dosage of theese products. This may help with many supplements, a unseperable calculator. Unless your RHF of course http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chem_calc3.html

Its a good idea to have a refrence sample for alk test kits. 1.1350 grams of baking soda in 1gallon of distilled water=10dkh. Check your alkalinity test kit! |

Of those two, use the ESV. The Seachem product is not ionically balanced.

bump for the knop question
--thanks Randy and Boxfish....Randy:>thank you that is exactly what i was thinking as well...the ESV just runs out so ridiculously fast...you have to dump like half a bottle to raise your Mag 10ppm....guess that is why you have gone the way of Mag Flake..i just dont have room anymore to store a bunch of flake and mix it up....my garage has to be filled by my new cadillac so that is out.. looks like absorbing the hit of ESV is the way to go |

No, I'm not familiar with the Knop magnesium additive ingredients.
In the case of Seachem magnesium, not ionically balanced means that it supplies more sulfate, relative to calcium, than is present in seawater. One can use Epsom salts from the grocery store and attain the same result.
