Which GFO do you prefer?

Hello,

Its time to change out my GFO and I am not sure what to refill the reactor with. I have used PhosBan in the past and have no complaints. It is just a little expensive. I'd like to hear from some people who use Warner Marine PHOSaR, as this seems to be a little cheaper and was causing a little bit of a stir when it came out. The media will be run in a phosban reactor.

Thanks,
Mike

I just got a bucket of GFO pellets from twopartsolution.com for a hell of a good price. I am hoping these do the trick....they certainly were CHEAP!

There was a huge write up on carbon and phos done in the main reef forum a few months back. It went into analysis on clarity produced and cost ratio's and what not for Carbon. Wish I had subscribed to the thread to provide a link, it had charts and all. Based on the results of that thread I ordered WM carbon and GFO.

twopartsolution's carbon and warner's pelletized are the exact same, I believe--and twopartsolutions is cheaper. They both look like little 2mm mechanical pencil leads.

I've been using Fauna Marin Ultra PowerPhos and it appears to be very similar to RowaPhos. I have no complaints about the FM GFO, it seems to do the job.

I agree with gotfish8. I have tried almost every product and none of them compare with Rowa. I used WM for a while, but corals kept a brown tint. Switched back to Rowa and in a week brown was gone.

I was thoroughly satisfied with Phosban, but then tried WM Phosar...I like it even better...its cleaner than phosban and cheaper..does just as a good a job. I have only had limited experience with rowa and used it in a fitler sock rather than a reactor so I can't say too much.

Fiji ....your corals being brown have nothing to do with what brand of GFO you are using..all due respect and all, but your statement seemed somewhat, actually completely ridiculous.

What's ridiculous about my statement? Apparently you didn't put 2 and 2 together. Let's try this: PO4 + acropora = brown. Sorry, I will try and keep it simple for you in the future

You left phosban out of your equation.

I've been using rowaphos but will be trying the GFO pellets to see how they do. The price is so low compared to the rowa but if it doesn't do as well, I'll go back to rowa in a heartbeat.
Would be nice if it does as well, the savings would be great.

I agree... I tried Rowa once and it barely lasted two weeks. The effluent would register .01 on the hanna, then 1.5-2 weeks later, the effluent went up to .08 - .10. I even tried adding twice the recommend and had the same results... Went back to Warner Marine's Phosar, its cheaper and lasts quite a bit longer.

I tried PHOsR, Rowaphos and Phosban.

Although Rowa seemed to habe a bit more adsorption capacity ti required a lot of rinsing to get the small particulate out. Because of the grain shapes Rowa and Phosban had a tnedency to channel the flow and clump together. While clumping the adsorption diminished.
PHOsR because of the shape created a more uniform flow, it was also easier to rinse with less fines. Because of the more uniform flow it did not clumped so it ended up lasting two to three times longer and fully utilizing it's capacity.

I used Rowa and phoslock. It clumped so I'm trying the pellets from twopartsolution.com. So far no clumping and much more uniform flow. Unfortuanately I don't have a good phosphate test kit to test the results.

I have used Rowa and recently have been using PhosLock. I can tell no difference in the performance.

I use ROWA & WM Phosar. Phosar is so cheap (Relatively speaking), that I can mix the 2 together in a reactor & a sock to exend ROWA's performance (or just use 1/2 as much as I normally would). I have been doing this for about a year without any issues. I change monthly due to heavey load.
