Since it has been there a few years undisturbed, there might be some interesting analyses. I'm just not sure how to generate any meaningful data

You might want to stir it a few times and note what happens.

IMO there is a realistic chance that nothing really negative happens.

or you could have an 'accident'.

Randy's right. Maybe we need to come up with something besides "crash".

How about a latent inability to perform as expected?

Nevermind that sounds like a Viagra commercial.

Well I was telling the truth when I said I skipped 10 or so pages , or atleast most of those 10 pages.

IMO a crash is about the worst in a line of many scenarios.

I think the scenarious should be left out first. There are a few processes which take place in sandbeds and are quite rock solid.

An agreement on these and leaving out speculative and less likely processes out can help in accepting certain scenarious taking place. Very good ones and very bad ones and a lot of other scenarious inbetween.

We could include bacteria for a few processes.

I'm still waiting on that big bubble to burst and the OTS to wipe me out. I'm not to worried however, when I smell the hydrogen sulfide I'll just add some big heaters and raise prokaryotic bacteria and Riftia pachyptila.

And I wouldn't show my bare bottom in public .

Riftia likes it cold.

Just thought you people would be interested to know that Charlotte Harbor is "crashing" due to hurricane Charley. According to unnamed "experts" the hurricane churned up the muck (DSB ? ) in Chalotte Harbor that "...released gases, robbing the water of oxygen and killing the fish." Apparently dead fish are washing up on shore in significant numbers in Charlotte Harbor as a result of hurricane Charley disturbing the sediments.

fwiw,

Agu

"Robbing the water of oxygen" sounds like a biological oxygen demand (BOD) issue. In short, the surface water run off and churn up from the bottom has flooded the water column with organics which leads to a bacterial bloom. The bacteria then consume all the oxygen in their feeding frenzy on the organic nutrients.

Same problem is often encountered with industrial and commercial waste water discharges. (Especially sewage plant discharges.)

Sounds like that to me too Mutt.

One of the reasons you don't want to disturb a DSB. People don't realize that sediments have distinct biological layers each doing their own thing to clean up organic wastes. Mix those layers up and things don't work so well

Obviously Charley didn't read all the "don't stir your DSB" threads.

Bomber

Nothing that can't be solved if they have a good ORP meter and a couple of barges of permanganate.
