very inactive yellow tang

Two days ago, I did some maintenance work in my tank by adding a new powerhead. Ever since then, my yellow tang has been very in active. He is barely eating and seems to breathing heavily. He is just hiding behind the rocks and rarely swimming out. Otherwise he seems healthy.

I checked my water params and everything is fine:

Ammonia:0
Nitrite:0
Nitrate:2.5

What should I do? Does the new power head bother him? I have 2 MaxiJet 1200 in my 55g. All the other fish (2 chromis and 1 clown) seem fine.

I dont know if it is related, but I also just had a green algae bloom that is beginning to go away with this new power head.

Sounds like low flow but with new powerhead i dought it.
Mb the powerhead has a short. remove the new powerhead and see if he get better. If so get another powerhead.
Or mb with the better flow your kicking up alot of old uneaten food and other harmfull material that was settled in the rocks and SB.

MaxiJet 1200s aren't extremely powerful, and I doubt it would bother the tang in any case.

Lethargy and rapid breathing are bad signs, sounds like the tang may be coming down with something. Keep an eye on him, watch for ich spots or signs of bacterial infection and quarantine him if necessary for treatment. best of luck.

If there was a short, wouldnt all fish be affected? The other fish seem fine. In fact, my clown seems happier. But I did not check my params since adding the power head, so perhaps the power head kicked up my sandbed and raised my params

Just suggestions. But its something that will only get worse and may affect the other fish.
Do you feed your tang nori? Cause if is diet is not up to par then he can also become stressed alot faster.

I agree in that tangs like the high flow--could be stressed out by something else in the tank-------or
its just normal "abnormal" behaviour for a tang--they do some weird behaviour things at times.

Three days later, my tang is almost back to normal. I am thinking that maybe he just got real scared when I put my hand in the tank to add the power head.

My yellow tang did the same after I moved some rocks around. Stresses them out for up to a week or so.
