Nate, yes I did rinse the sand thoroughly before filling the tank.

The video did not upload correctly, it's supposed to be longer, so I fixed it

Amanda,

I noticed that you had a powerhead in the tank. Did you feel that the pump that came with the tank needed some help?

Hello Amanda,

I started my aquascaping of my 29 gal. the same way you have yours. Kind of like a wall of rock. This setup seems to be very common and I understand why for the most part. In my case I was trying to hide some of the plumbing. Than I had Ken (Mustang on Michigan Reefer) come over to have a look at some problems I was having. He asked if I had ever thought of a cave in my aquascaping? Well one thing lead to another I now have a great new more natural look. Please don't get me wrong the look of your rock work is cool. I'm just offering up the cave idea as it has worked so well for me. My yellow watchman goby spends a lot of time in the cave and so does my coral banded shrimp (upside down on the top of the cave).

Good luck,

Kevin

Flytrap, yes, I felt it needed a little bit more. The pump that is supplied with it is very weak. I wanted more circulation. However, I didn't want a hurrricane in there either, so I added a tiny PH. If it proves to be too much for the horses, I will remove it.

Kevin, thanks for posting!!! The aquascaping in there is not anywhere near being done! I have way more rock to add and I basically just took it out of the box and in the water, no aquascaping has even been attempted yet, but a cave is a great idea!!!!! Thank you!

Amanda

Amanda,

How did you fasten the PH and exit the power cord?

Thanks

Flytrap, I fastened teh PH with the suction cups it came with. There is a small outlet for cords in the back of the hood.

Just wanted to let everyone know, with no heater and just the lights, the tank is at 78 degrees.

Landon, sea horses prefer cooler temps, 76-78, so this should be good for now, I just wonder about in the summer! Then again, we keep our air conditioning on all the tim ein the summer too.

Great video! I like the way the corner seams on the JBJ are made...very cool. When you were opening the lid, I was thinking, 'Dont drop the camera'! Obviously you're a pro at the one-handed video. Keep it coming

Where in the world did you get those white water jugs? (can be sung to the tune of Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego if wanted) I have looked almost everywhere....hopefully they have the place down here...

My local groceries sell spring water in jugs just like those.

I have one as a makeshift kalk dripper right now. Felt strange to bring it home and dump the water down the drain.

Very exciting! I'm sorry if I missed it, but can you tell us more about the sand? Type, source, ect? I've heard its like having a black car; nothing looks better when clean, but shows the "dirt" when not. Anyway, I too would love to give it a try in the 12DX I'm about to set up for the kids.

kaspm, HI and [welcome] and my thread!!
Please join me and all the friends I have made here, in getting this new tank established and growing. Since I already have a 75 gallon reef, the second time around it's not as scary, however, I do still have questions! Please feel free to ask any questions or post any pictures of your tank. That goes for everyone!!!

bkwudzjeep, Nate is right! You can buy those jugs of spring water at any grocery store on the water/juice/coffee aisle! They work great!

DanandDavis, Hi!!! and [welcome] and to my thread as well!!
I love seeing all the new people, I hope you stick around, there is tons to learn! The sand I bought is Black Tahitian Moon Sand. The sand itself is the same size and texture of sugar granules. It's very sparkley and I love it. Mine is covered right now in settlement, however, once the cycles completes and I'm able to really get in there, I will skim over the sand lightly with a vacuum and get the yuckies off. Also, I will have some type of sand sifter in there. Probably a goby of some kind.

Amanda

Amanda, if the water is cloudy and there's an odor, there's probably enough nutrients in the water to get the cycle going already - I wouldn't worry about adding an ammonia source.
I agree. Although my water became very cloudy and smelled horrible for a couple days.

Benny, thanks for the tip, but I'm not going to be adding anything to the tank, it will be cycling naturally. Ya, it takes longer, but this way I know I'm letting it do what it's supposed to in it's own time.
I did the same, and it worked out well--I think you will be fine.

Since you got cured LR, the tank will cycle in a week to a week and a half most likely. I re-did the nano from the 10g to the 15g this past saturday with a fresh 20lb bag of LS and cured LR from the LFS. I already had my diatom bloom two days ago and it is starting to clear up already.

I used the Cycle product on my 29g and 55g to help get the benificial bacteria's going quicker, but did nothing like that for the little tank.
