What size tank? I have a very similar set up. However there is a separate return pump. Unlike your way where it guarantees everything goes through the skimmer. The only disadvantage I see is that you might not have enough flow to suck in large partials that are floating around in your tank near the overflow. (Since you will have such a small return)

I think you are better off having the skimmer just sit in the sump. It wont get all the water going through the sump the first round, but it should the second. Also the macro will trap anything big.

your second diagram is how mine is set up. Make sure you have a bubble trap before the return pump and it should be good.

You don't need a bubble trap on the inlet side. It kinda looks like you have one on the second diagram.
