At how many ppm does calcium start to cause stress on the animals?

Ca>480ppm, I'm bringing it down
dKH=9, ok
PO4=0ppm, ideal

1/06/08 after a water change
Ca= 480ppm, still a little high
pH= 8.2, I'd like it at 8.3
NO3= 10ppm, acceptable

I don't know of any data on the subject, and it might vary widely from species to species. Short term exposures often don't seem to cause any problems at all, up to the precipitation point.

If I was to bump Ca up by 100 ppm, my snails and clams will spawn. IMO that's a sign of stress. But to the addition, not elevated CA. I don't know how high it would have would be to cause stress, but I've not heard of anything like that. Many seem to report high Ca levels without a problem.

There are studies being done and have been done on calcium levels of ~500 ppm or higher and it just makes the corals grow faster. I'm sure there is some level where there will be an issue.

Mike

Many things can cause animals to go into spawning although it may have nothing to do with stress. A good example are SA Chiclids. Don't change their water for a few months and then do a large water change and POOF spawning. It was the old water, which had a high hardness, which was is inhibiting them from spawning. I cold also get feather duster to spawn at my command. All I had to do was take a stick and stir the gravel around them causing an increase in turbidity, which my be simulating a seasonal change , thus lets spawn

Overdo it with mammals and you get kidney stones.

Actually my friend who is a retired Navy surgeon tells me kidney stones are from under hydration.
