MAG Pellets - Ammonia Test

Well, I just picked up a bag of MAG pellets (flake isn't as readily available to me).

Before I used it I wanted to test for ammonia.

So, I put 2 tsp into about 1 cup of water. I estimate that to be ~4500 - 5000 ppm solution (based on the reef chemistry calculator).

I used my Seachem test kit to test this solution for ammonia.

Total ammonia was about 0.6 to 0.8 ppm or g/L. It's a color chart based test so it's not the most accurate.

What would be considered an acceptable amount of ammonia?

Zero

Don't, worry about that amount. Pretend you add 100 ppm in one dose. You will add 0.016 ppm ammonia. We don't want it to be any higher than 0.1 ppm. You would have to add 700 ppm in a single dosage to get it to 0 .1 ppm. And you are not suppose to add any more than 100 / day Mg ++

Thanks Boomer.

I actually did some calculations as well and decided that the amount I would be adding wasn't enough to really be all that concerned about.

Cheers,
