yes, well it is, and there is absolutely no smell of skimmate in my tank room. I did make the unit a bit too large but that was the size tube I had already. It works great and I have yet to change out the carbon!

First of all, that is a collection BUCKET. The cup is on top of the skimmer and serves a different purpose. I point this out as it may be confusing to some and I want to make sure that readers understand my earlier post.

That is a nice funky bucket! I am interested if you have any way of dealing with the smell. With the sometimes high humidity and temp. in my tank room, I MUST use the carbon on the bucket output. Also, you can't really se it in my pic, but my float valve is installed into the bucket lid so that I can remove the lid and take the bucket to the sink drain. That way there are no wires to deal with etc.

I went to the float valve after I blew up my skimmer. It literally exploded because the bucket was shutting down the foam head but not turning off the air. Over time it weakened the skimmer body until one day it exploded, and yes, I was standing right next to it. We have a very large house and it was so loud my wife came running from the far end of the upper floor...

Yea, I know. It was early, and cup types faster than bucket.

My sump room is in my basement, so the smell is not that big of a deal. There certainly is a smell, but not that bad really, except when I dump it in the sink. Then it gets stirred up real good.

If I had it anywhere near my living space, I would have a carbon filter

Mine is in a sealed tank room in my basement as well, but it can get very humid inside and when combined with skimmate odor, it can be fairly unpleasant. Of course, not many reefers entertain inside their tank rooms but mine is the local after-hours club! There is often 2 or 3 guys downing monk beers and talking crap about our wives.

I believe that larger collection cups alllow for the foam to build and fall off the head more easily than smaller collection cups. I cut my riser tube at an angle ala Weatherson and it works great.

I like the collection container.

So thats where Miller Lite comes from.

no kidding. I picked that bucket up because it is 6g rather than the standard 5g and it has a really good strong flat lid for attaching BHs to. I really like it. They were sold as coolers and came with a styrofoam insert.

Not exactly the same thing, but you could always put an electronic float valve at the top of the bucket that kicks your skimmer pump off.

WOW.

That thing is going to pull the salt out of the water. Seems to me like you need to upgrade to a bigger tank to feed that skimmer .

Sweet looking skimmer.

I hope to grow up to a skimmer like that.

Excellent workmanship as always Scott.

I want to see it running on your system too.
