I had a maxima clam for 2 years in a 29 gallon tank with 1x65 custom sealife power compact bulb. grew healthy, eventually upgraded lights and still have it today

wow that is beautiful mgny! could you share the equipment specifics on that tank? Also, any tips on how to succesfully grow my new clam like yours would be apprecieated.
How often should the VHOs be changed? Mine is over a year old, and I'm debating wether to switch them or not since the corals do not seem to mind. This thread definitely saved me a 3hr trip to place this clam under my HQI lighting in RI.

I thought I was getting off too easy. It was labeled as a maxima clam, but just to make sure, I'm going to post the pics.

The Tank is a 180,set up in 1996. I used vho's because of leroy from garf, who was one of the first to offer corals and info on the web. I use 6 140 watt bulbs, 3 aquasun 3 actinic. Always had planned on upgrading to mh bulbs because the so called experts said it was not possible to grow stonies and other livestock without mh lighting. I remember they talked specificly about blue acros. That like a lot of other info given out in the hobby is nonsense. You can grow any corals out there you just need to save the upper real estate for the higher light animals. I have four clams, 2 maximas, crocea, and a monster derasa. The derasa was purchased in the 90's at 3 inches. He lives on the bb and has grown to a foot plus. I change the bulbs yearly. They are uri bulbs powered by icecap ballasts. Extremely reliable equipment. Another perk is my electric bill is most likely less do to icecaps effficiency. I could not keep croceas for a while years back. I figured it was a light issue which it was'nt. It was a feeding issue. Was never informed that clams less than 2 inches needed to be fed. The crocea in the picture is 4years old, grown from 1 inch. Summing up lighting is way overated and wrongly used as a reason for a coral or clam doing poorly. Water quality and current or flow are way underrated. Hope that answers your questions. Mike

Thank you for the explanations mgny. What do you recommend that I feed the guy? Also, was it correctly labled in the LFS as maxima?
Dex, I know I know. This battle with aiptasia is almost futile. I poked that one with a chopstick few times for now. I'll bring out the kalk tomorrow.
