Skimmer for a 75g?

I am new to this hobby, so I didn't know whether to post this in the "New to the Hobby" forum, or here. So here goes... I currently have a 20g tank set up and have been filtering with just water changes. I just purchased a 75g from a local reefer (because this is such an addicting hobby!!!) and am looking to put an in sump skimmer in the system when I start setting it up. I plan to keep some LPS, inverts, and livestock (6-8 smaller fish???) in this tank. I know there are many great used skimmers out there and I am on a budget. I just don't know what I should be looking for. There are so many brands and models, so what I am looking for is suggestions as to brand and model so I can start limiting my searching and get serious about this. I am thinking somewhere between $150-$300? Does this sound reasonable for a 75g? Any suggestions are GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Here ya go, its the same exact question. I'd get the MSX 160, then the octo extreme 150.

I have a 72G and chose to go with the Octopus NW-200 with the OTP-2000 pump. Reasonable priced. I think i paid about $220 from my LFS 2 years ago. I'm sure it's cheaper now and widely available on the net. Google it. I'm pleased with the performance since i have 7 fish. Their are mods out their to increase performance that i've been thinking about doing.

You sure it came with the otp 2000 and not the 3000?

I didn't realize that the Octopus was so well liked. luke33, it almost sounded like you sugested the Ocotpus Extreme in that forum that you posted above. I'm going to research the MSX160...if it's new, wouldn't it be smart to stay away from a new product until it is tried and true?

I had a custom skimmer running on my 165display and volume tank. It was pulling around 35scfh. It was a stubby little guy. I just bought a octo nw 200 from marinesolutionsinc and have modded it to pull 35scfh, but the reaction chamber is twice as tall as my last skimmer. I plan or recircing it this weekend if i get a chance. Here's my thread.

Now for the last skimmer suggestion, i recomended the msx160 but it was out of the price range. So i suggested the 150extreme octo. There is no reason you need to drop 500bux into a piece of acrylic when you have have a very similar skimmer for a couple hundred. If i were in your boat i'd jump on the msx160 but wait until next week to see everyone's reaction if you want. I'm pretty sure there going to be a win win skimmer. I'm just to cheap to spend over 200bux on a skimmer.

Yeah waiting is a good option. I am kinda in the same place you are, upgrading to 75. The msx160 is what I am looking at, the footprint is only 7" x 9". I am waiting till I hear some reviews about it though. The msx160 is only $299.
