Has anybody mod'd the venturi on the sedra 5000? And was it worth the effort? Is everyone making the zip ties tight or are you leaving them loose to allow the mesh to be more fluffy?

Thanks

I Modded an OR3700 with the Mavgi mesh. I cut of all the pins and sanded it down except the last row closest to the magnet. I was able to zip tie 2 layers on. Im only pulling 11-12 lpm with the mod and it is making a lot of heat. It also wont start unless it is out of water. I think there was something wrong with the original impellor as it always ran very warm and had problems starting.

I think my zip ties are rubbing against the pump housing. Is there any other way to attach the mesh? There must be a better way than zipties.

You can glue an acrylic disk onto the original shaved down impellor and then your zip ties will be slightly raised off of the interior surface of the pump.

Malifluous-
Try blowing air into the pump to get it going when in water and use fishing line and a needle. Good luck

I did it to my 3500 before I sold it. I could only get 2 layers of mesh on but it did make a very noticable difference.

thanks Malifluous I was hoping to hear a good report on these pumps. I have a sedra 5000 on my ASM G-4 with the mod and it's
working very well but the body should handel more air than that. I have another 5000 that I could add to the skimmer but was hoping the OR3700 would do the job of the two pumps.
I'll wait to see if others have done the mod on the 3700 before I make a move.

Has anyone noticed that when there is alot of foam in the cup you start builing pressure inside the skimmer. I came home the other day and noticed that the G3 was not performing as well as the previous day. I thought it was the venturi that was clogged, I poured a bunch of RO water down it and that usually fixes the problem. Not this time though, I removed the top to the skimmer and it was back to normal. It must have made enough foam gum up the slots for the lid and it wouldn't let enough air through. Just something to look out for!

I just got my needlewheel taken apart on my OTP3000. I left the rear set of pins on but need to know how many layers of mesh should I put on?

Thanks

Kent i must know what the lenghth of the body tube on your skimmer is.Also what is the lenghth of the neck.

I plan on down sizing the skimmer and using 3 Tunze minis for a 5 gallon.By speculashins it will be rated at 30 gallons

I did the mod on one of my two OR3500, I did not want to cut my needlewheel so I made an acrylic disk and put three layers on it and it rocked, until I turned it off to see if it would start back up under water. The torque on it stripped the two keys on the magnet shaft where I pulled the needlewheel disk off of and it is where the acrylic was so the disk just spun. I order two of the paddle impellers from aqua medic for 5 bucks and I am waiting for them to cut them down instead of the needlewheels. I'll keep you aprised.

Great to know it works good. Let me know how it works when you put the mesh on the regular impeller.
Thanks,
Vic

Hi guys,

I just modded my OR3700. I replaced the needlewheel with a standard impeller that I trimmed back. I then added two layers of the mesh and zip tied it down.

The results are encouraging. I use the OR pump instead of the Sedra 5000 that came with my Euroreef 8-2 RC and I went from 10 l/min to 15 l/min. Pretty cool. Let's see what happens over the new few days.
