custom stand built and have ? on finish

My stand is built and need to know what people do about the solid panel the tank sits on. Do I need to water proof it? My old tank did'nt have a solid stand for the tank. What do I use to finish it and were do I buy it?

I used Varathane to seal my cabinet, keeps the water drops that are bound to happen from getting into the wood.

anything except water-based finish should work.
