Is 9"x12" big enough for a refugium?

I have a problem. I am making an existing 29 gallon tank into a sump/refugium for a 75 gallon tank. My problem is that after I add my skimmer (which is very long) and return pump, I only have 9"x12" left for a refugium. Is this enough room for that or should I scrap that idea of the refugium and just use my sump as a sump?

Any amout of fuge is better than none - I would do it just for the benefits a fuge presents. Since I added mine, which is about the same size as yours, it has exported a ton of nutrients and been a great help.
