First off, what a beautiful tank you have, stunning is the word that comes to mind. One of the things I enjoy about this hobby is the many different ways to sucessfully keep a reef tank. Not only is your tank very easy on the eyes, your attitude is very gracious, it seems so easy to give you compliments, because you accept them so well. I tend to like corals that are very colorful and really do not care if they are rare or hard to keep (other than, the person should have the husbandry skills to keep them) your tank is saturated with beautiful colors and very nicely aquascaped, it would be neat to see your tank in person, because even with great camera's, it is almost impossible to give a whole tank photograph, that truly captures the tank. Sorry for the ramblings, once again kudos to you!
Dan

Thanks for the nice comments guys!
MrSpiffy ~ Yep its a fox coral. It started off as a small splinter that was left over from fragging a large colony at work. The skeleton was the size of a pencil and the head expanded no more than the size of a bottle cap. It took a year or so for it to grow to the size it is now. They are known to be slow growers which can be a good thing in a crowded tank full of LPS. dtaylor123 ~ I really appreciate the kind words! Pictures are limited as to how well they represent our reef tanks. Depth of field is lost, especially with straight-on shots. I would imagine everyone else's tanks here look much better in person. Here is another actinic shot I took last night looking at the tank on an angle to try to capture a bit more depth. For some reason my orange colored zoos are not being captured very well by the camera.

Sweet tank! I'm working on a 40g now and starting to think I over-complicated things with internal horizontal overflow, sump and closed loop. Your tank is nice and simple and still thriving. Excellent job!

Very cool! It's nice to have a slower grower in a smaller tank, so it doesn't crowd other corals. My wife and I saw a Fox coral at the LFS and really like it, but we didn't know much about it so we didn't buy it. From what I've read, they're fairly peaceful (a.k.a. they don't spread sweepers like galaxia!), and would make a nice addition to our tank, too.
The tank looks very nice! You should be proud of it! Now... can you make me a clone? |

Thanks guys!
MrSpiffy ~ Fox corals are a nice LPS to have and are fairly hardy. They don't need a lot of light or flow either. Good luck if you get one! Well I did not get to take all the pictures I wanted and had to give the camera back. The fish like the trenches, caves and overhangs that are difficult to see in the photos. Here is a pic of some sweet zoos I just picked up.

Thanks! The only thing that bummed me out about the actinic shot is none of the orange colors showed up. There are orange zoos all over my rock work that look awesome in real life.

Thanks nano7joy!
In honor of my 3000th post here are a few more actinic shots. I run my tank under actinics 5 hours a day and stocked my corals with this in mind. The camera is a of low quality and difficult to work with but I guess its better than nothing. I also decided to get rid of my large Kenya tree and put my daisy polyps in its place. It was casting too much of a shadow and inhibiting my nepthia. It also drooped all over my zoos and nearby corals every night. I also added some more live rock and some new zoo frags to fill in some spaces. I also moved my Fox coral of to the side a bit and put some new zoos in its place. Full tank shot with a bit cropped off: Some more new zoos: Nepthia: More Zoos: Thats going to be it for awhile! Hopefully next time i will have a better camera to work with.

The coolest tank ive seen. Imo there is no better filter than biology.
Aquabucket, whats the number 1 most important thing you would tell reefers to maintain a nice tank like this?

Its a good idea to have a refrence sample for alk test kits. 1.1350 grams of baking soda in 1gallon of distilled water=10dkh. Check your alkalinity test kit! |

Beautiful tank. Now the urge to upgrade to a 40g breeder is even worse. :P

Nice Tank! Do you target feed your hammer coral (like you do the sun coral) If so, how often and with what? Keep up the good work.

Thanks!
I have found that target feeding is not needed since the tank is skimmerless. Both of the hammer colonies started from a single head. I do target feed the red and pink challace @ night once a week or so. It really improves the growth rate on that one. Mysis is my food of choice along with a variety of chopped seafoods.

I cannot decide whether to vote for this or the skimmer thread...
Can you tell me if you use a smp or what since you have no skimmer? Cheers, and its a a lovely tank my friend, well done. Conor. |

Thanks Conor! The tank is a "stand alone system" that is in balance between import and export. I utilize wads of Chaetomorphia algae that is hidden behind the back rock wall for orthophosphate removal.
The tank is pretty much on cruise control now and I've only had to do 2 water changes since December. I dose a 2 part additive every night after lights out. Top-offs are done during the day via a drip method.

Here are some shots I took today. I wanted show my tank room and how I have my aquarium projected live on the wall. I used an old digital camera and spliced it into my Optoma projector that's hooked up to my computer for watching movies and videos. I did not have much time with the camera and was unfamiliar with its settings but I think the shots give you an idea how everything looks. Here are a couple of tanks shots I also snapped today: Here is the link to my projector thread.
