soundproofing aquarium stand?
Has anyone ever soundproofed their aquarium? If so what did you use and how did you do it.

sound proof no, lower it yes.
To lower sound put some soft or flexible pipe in on the return pump. Not the whole way just a few inches to absorb vibrations. You could also put in a layer of Styrofoam under the sump to help absorb vibrations. |

If you clog it up to sound proof it, I'd be concerned about heat/lack of ventilation as well. I did something like frank suggested. Ran all flexible tubing, and placed return pump on a small piece of wood, then placed that on top of some shipping foam to decrease noise and vibration.

I've heard of people using Dynamat in their stands. Some noise has to escape though because you need ventilation.

I added some styrofoam type insulation to the doors. I also cuat a piece of plywood for the back that I put the insulation on as well. I don't have the rear plywood attached to the stand so there is airflow around it. This does a pretty good job of absorbing sound. It is not sound proofed but is sound reduced.

Frank 2926, what do you mean by flexible tubing in on the return pump. Do you mean using it to connnect the return pump to the return pipe or is it something else?

I used a product called sound board I bought at Home Depot to line the ends and doors of my stand. I also put some under my sump. It does make a big difference. Fairly cheap. Comes in
1/2"x 4'x8' sheets. This material does not seem to soak up water as I have a few skimmer overflows that have filled up my stand. |

i have dynamat in my stand it helped a lot. but as stated before you need ventalation so some noise does escape. oh yea and if i didnt have any left from my car i would have never used that. it is really expensive. i would not recomend doing it its just wasted money that could be used for better things, ie frags.

Sirofoam is over with the insulation in home depot. And to the flexible tubing question. A small piece of flexible pipe from the return pump to the return pipe. You can use all flexible pvc pipe if you want but the stuff is pretty pricey. You can get away with about a foot of the the flex pipe. Return pump, a foot of flex pipe, then the normal cheaper pipe up to tank. It will dampen alot of vibration noise.
