I had been using Seachem Reef salt and had good stable parameters. There was some hype about Red Sea Pro salt so I bought some and tried it. I have been fighting with stability ever since I changed. I think when this Red Sea Pro runs out I will switch back to Seachem Reef salt.

I used IO for years and recently switched to RC and am very happy with it.

IO for fish only (almost 20 years) and RC with additives for mixed reef.

I use Tropic Marin Pro. Why?
1. Marcey at Sea in the City of Orlando, FL told me it was good. 2. I'm a newb and I need all the pro I can get. Rob

I use IO because it is very consistent based on my experience and readily available in my area.
I already supplement Kalk because WC alone would not add enough ALK or CA for a healthy reef. Almost All of the other parameters in IO were comparable to other salts based on this study a few years ago. Feature Article: Inland Reef Aquaria Salt Study, Part I http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/11/aafeature1 Feature Article: Inland Reef Aquaria Salt Study Part II http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/12/aafeature1 (Thanks jdieck for posting these links in the lab analysis thread) The important thing I took away from reading the articles is that no single salt stood out as being superior to all of the others. In other words they all excelled in some areas and were deficient in others. IMO using the same salt is more important as the proportions in the environment will be better maintained and cause less stress on the inhabitants due to fluctuations. Ken PS Go Bucks!

IO or Reef Crystals.
I have been using IO for years with great results. I just recently started using Reef Crystals because our club did a group buy and seem to be getting good results from it as well. And yes IO is a great salt for reef tanks as is evidenced by the multitude of successfull reef tanks that use it......and some very sucessful tanks do I have never added anything to the IO I use for water changes. If your running a reef you are adding Ca with another method anyway. Chris

I did use IO...but just changed to RC. I love the smell of Reef Crystals.
A while back I was complaining to my LFS about a fish that had died soon after acclimation. They handed me a Georgia Aquarium/ IO T-Shirt. My fish that died only cost $11.50 It's a really cool shirt because it has a picture of Ralph and Norton on the back (two whale sharks[dead now]). IO was using it for an add before they died so it has to be a limited edition shirt. The pet store owner thought it had Nemo on the back and it had not been taken out of the plastic bag yet. Says Instant Ocean Ralph and Norton swim in it too! If it's good enough for the worlds largest aquarium it's good enough for me. I don't think it killed Ralph and Norton. No that's not what killed Ralph and Norton

The original poster made a comment in a different thread stating that he didn't believe that anyone was using Red Sea Pro, but the poll has shown that isn't the case. I know a lot of people using it, including myself.

One week 7 gallons of Tropic marin pro reef only
next week 8 gallons of tmproreef/IO 50/50 Why, because I have getting rid of my old buckets of IO because it sucks for SPS. Alk is way to high, ca is way to low, mg is too low...that equals not a good salt. |
