UK zoanthid swap.

hi guys,

i am in the process of planning a zoanthid swap scheme in the uk. as you may or may not know, the uk is way behind in terms of the species and colours of zoas / palys compared with the US and Germany. over here all we tend to get are greens and browns. i am hoping to collect unusual (for the uk) species and frag them for fellow reefers, the idea being that reefers send us a zoo in return for one of ours, thus building up a collection of as many species as possible. the scheme will be run on a NON-PROFIT basis, trying to build a community of fraggers, who will hopefully then go on to distribute frags to other reefers, ad infiditum.

what i am looking for is information first and donations of frags later.

would it be ok under cites regulations, to have people sending captive propogated frags, would the shipping be ok, timewise.

i know that asking for something for nothing is asking a lot, but also know from, swapping with reefers in the uk, that reefers can be incredibly generous when asked.

i look forward to seeing the replies, and hopefully, pledges from reefers of the odd polyp or two!!!

BTW, it doesn't just work one way, if there's anything unusual we have i'm sure we would be able to help you guys out!!!

Just curious.. What kindof goodies do you guys get over there that we typically don't have access to over here? Is there such thing as next day/ second day to UK? I'm sure its probably NOT CHEAP!! lol

Thanks,
Chris

we tend to get the leftovers of what's not wanted elsewhere!!

you may get an idea here:

http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/s...d.php?t=189158

as you can see rarer stuff tends to be in high demand, but as i said i want to set up a database of swappers not sellers!!!

I think 2 days should be fine with zoo's. I do 2nd day shipping all the time with them. I see your a nurse.. I used to be an RN too.

I'd be curious as to what kinds of sps you all get over there. Anything that couldn't be imported into the US for whatever reason possibly?

Zoanthids are not regulated by CITES, so I wouldn't see a problem there.

Might I just say, although you have a lot of green like you stated, you have some really nice zoos, and I like the RPE's you got. I have a bunch of stuff I could frag a polyp or two of, but I'm not paying the shipping to UK. You pay shipping and I'll send some stuff. Any courier that you have found doing a good job with international shipping?

Correct, but to expand on it a bit, ANY live rock is on CITES and a big no-no. So make sure the zoanthids are matted onto a ceramic or concrete plug you can prove isn't live rock just in case.

Yeah, RPE's, red people eaters, sorry. The second pic from the link you sent are what I was talking about. Deep red palythoa's with the green mouth(the defining trait of people eater's). I have some myself and I love them. They go for anywhere between $1-$10 per polyp(depending on where you get them from, usually closer to $3-$5).
